CASTL Information

The University of Virginia Center for the Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning (CASTL) focuses on the quality of teaching and students' learning. CASTL's aim is to improve educational outcomes through the empirical study of teaching, teacher quality, and classroom experience from preschool through high school, with particular emphasis on the challenges posed by poverty, social or cultural isolation, or lack of community resources.
CASTL seeks to:

  • Integrate the Curry School of Education and other University Programs in an interdisciplinary process for policy and practice in teacher education, student learning, and the quality of the classroom experience
  • Ensure that all children in schools and classrooms across the country have access to high-quality teaching and learning experiences
  • Engage in programs of research evaluation and improving the quality of pre-service teacher education
  • Design new mechanisms for the study and support of teachers in the field
  • Understand classroom conditions that maximize students' engagement in learning
  • Integrate teachers' knowledge in the arts and sciences with their skills in transmitting this knowledge
